Overview
India’s demand for skilled professionals in public policy is growing rapidly. While nearly a million aspirants attempt the UPSC Civil Services Examination each year, only a fraction succeed. For the rest, public policy careers offer meaningful opportunities to drive societal change.
Traditional public policy often focus on theoretical knowledge—constitutional frameworks, economic policies, public administration, and social issues—but lack the practical training and mentorship needed to build real-world competence. The Applied Public Policy Lab is a six-month, project based experiential program designed to bridge this gap. Unlike typical online public policy certificate programs in India, APPL emphasizes applied learning, problem-solving, and personalized mentorship. Participants gain hard skills, craft compelling resumes and LinkedIn profiles, receive guidance on assignments and interviews, and benefit from continuous 1:1 guidance and support.

Public policy is becoming increasingly data-driven. Whether it’s analyzing labor force participation, evaluating social schemes, or understanding economic growth, the ability to work with data is now a core skill for policy professionals.

We cover the entire data analysis workflow from data acquisition and cleaning to analysis and visualization. You’ll not only learn tools, but also how to apply them in real-world public policy contexts.
- Python Fundamentals: Data types, variables, control flow, functions, and core programming concepts.
- Data Manipulation with Pandas: Working with DataFrames/Series, cleaning messy data (missing values, duplicates), filtering, sorting, merging, reshaping.
- Numerical Computing with NumPy: Efficient array operations and mathematical functions.
- Statistical Analysis with SciPy/Statsmodels: Running statistical tests and building basic models.
- Relational Databases: Tables, relationships, primary/foreign keys.
- SQL Fundamentals: SELECT, WHERE, GROUP BY, ORDER BY, JOIN operations.
- Advanced SQL: Subqueries, window functions, common table expressions (CTEs), and optimization techniques.
- Interface and Concepts: Connecting to data, working with dimensions and measures, calculated fields.
- Building Visualizations: Bar charts, line charts, scatter plots, maps, dashboards, and interactive elements.
- Integrated Projects: Use SQL for data extraction, Python for analysis, and Tableau for visualization—all in the context of a live public policy challenge.
- Portfolio Development: Build a collection of projects to showcase your skills to employers.
